PLANET RULER LIGHT
Smooth the year's passage
An annual lamp aligned with the ruling planet of the year — for safe passage and steady fortune through every season.
01 — THE TAI SUI
In the long encounter of Chinese cosmology and Buddhism, the Tai Sui — the ruling celestial of each year — is honoured as a guardian of the cycles of time. Each lunar new year a different Tai Sui general assumes the throne of the year, and those born under signs that conflict with the ruling general are traditionally said to face heightened difficulty or disturbance.
The practice rests on a simple Buddhist principle: the offering of light is a form of generosity, a dispelling of darkness, and a sustained prayer made on behalf of the donor and their family. When the lamp is consecrated, prayers are offered to the year’s Tai Sui general, to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and to the protectors of the temple — and the lamp then burns through the year as a continuous supplication.
HOW THE LAMP PROTECTS
Aligned with the year
Certain zodiac signs are traditionally said to benefit most each year — those born in the year of the ruling animal, those in directly opposing years, and those whose elements clash with the year’s cycle. Yet the practice is open to all who wish to invite protection and steady fortune. The lamp is maintained by the temple; the donor’s role is the sincerity of the original offering and the continued holding of intention. At the year’s close, the merit accumulated is dedicated to the wellbeing of the sponsor’s family and to all sentient beings.
02 — COMMON QUESTIONS
Do I need to be born under a conflicting sign?
No. While those whose sign conflicts with the year’s Tai Sui benefit most, the lamp is open to all. Many practitioners offer it annually as a baseline of devotional life, not waiting for an unfavourable year.
Whose names can be included?
Sponsors submit names to be included — for themselves, for family members, and for those in particular need of protection, such as elderly relatives and young children.
